One of my favorite types of holidays is definitely a cruise, mainly because it bypasses the hassle of airport lines and the general chaos of air travel. You simply arrive and can head straight to your room, which is my favorite part. That's exactly what we did when we embarked on our cruise to Finland. We invited some friends from the States to join us for this adventure. We were in dire need of a break and eager to explore new, beautiful places, and Finland did not disappoint.
The country boasts stunning architecture and churches, and the city center is perfect for exploring on foot, which we did, spending a lot of time wandering around. The nightlife on the cruise was delightful, and the relaxing moments we shared made us decide to plan more cruise holidays in the future. It's also an ideal vacation for families with kids! For some reason, I became obsessed with croissants filled with Nutella - they're so easy to carry around and utterly delicious!
On our first day, we had already enjoyed some karaoke, drinks, and dinner the previous night. The cruise ship was equipped with a casino, dance areas, and pubs, leading us to have a fantastic evening of dancing and fun. Although I was quite tired the next morning, the excitement of sightseeing in Finland was too compelling to ignore. So, despite my fatigue, I was up early to explore this beautiful city.
Cruising the Baltic Sea and arriving in the vibrant city of Helsinki is an adventure worth cherishing. The Finnish capital, known for its unique blend of modernity and history, welcomes travelers with open arms. If you're considering a Helsinki trip by cruise, you're in for an unforgettable experience. Here's a glimpse into what makes this journey so enchanting.
Setting Sail
Your journey to Helsinki begins as soon as you step aboard your cruise ship. Whether you're starting your voyage from Stockholm, St. Petersburg, or another Baltic city, the leisurely cruise through the picturesque archipelago of the Baltic Sea offers breathtaking views of islands and serene waters. The anticipation builds as you approach the Finnish coastline, and the Helsinki skyline comes into view.
The Baltic Sea, with its intricate web of islands, is like sailing through a natural wonderland. The sea is dotted with small, rocky outcrops and lush, forested islands, some inhabited, others wild and untouched. This part of the journey not only sets the stage for the adventure ahead but also provides a moment of tranquility on the water, offering a scenic prelude to the urban exploration awaiting in Helsinki.
Arriving in Helsinki: A Warm Welcome
Helsinki is a city of contrasts, where modern architecture meets historic charm. As your cruise ship docks at the bustling South Harbor, you'll be greeted by a vibrant cityscape. The South Harbor is not just a gateway to Helsinki but also an attraction in itself, with its vibrant market square and iconic Uspenski Cathedral towering above.
The harbor area is alive with activity, from vendors selling fresh fish and flowers to locals and tourists enjoying the sea air. The Uspenski Cathedral, with its red-brick facade and golden cupolas, stands as a testament to Helsinki's rich religious heritage, providing a stark yet beautiful contrast to the sleek lines of modern Finnish architecture.
Exploring the Heart of Helsinki
Once ashore, you'll find Helsinki's compact city center easily accessible. The best way to explore is on foot or by using the efficient public transportation system, including trams and ferries. Here are some must-visit attractions in Helsinki:
1. Senate Square (Senaatintori): Start your exploration at this iconic square, surrounded by neoclassical buildings, including the impressive Helsinki Cathedral. It's a perfect spot for a leisurely stroll and some photos. The square is not just a beautiful architectural ensemble but also a historical and cultural heart of the city, where events, markets, and festivals often take place.
2. Helsinki Market Square (Kauppatori): Immerse yourself in local culture at this bustling open-air market. Sample Finnish delicacies like salmon soup and Karelian pasties or pick up handmade crafts and souvenirs. The market is a melting pot of Finnish life, where you can engage with locals, taste regional specialties, and buy unique gifts.
3. Suomenlinna Fortress: Take a short ferry ride to the UNESCO-listed Suomenlinna Fortress, a historic sea fortress spread across several islands. Explore its fortifications, tunnels, and museums while enjoying panoramic views of the sea. Suomenlinna offers a glimpse into Finland's military past and its strategic importance in the Baltic region. It's a place where history, nature, and leisure intertwine.
4. Design District: Helsinki is a design lover's paradise. Stroll through the Design District to discover boutiques, galleries, and museums dedicated to Finnish design, including the famous Marimekko. This area celebrates the Finnish ethos of simplicity, functionality, and beauty, showcasing why Finnish design is world-renowned.
5. Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church): This unique church is carved into solid rock and features a stunning copper dome. Its acoustics make it a popular venue for concerts. The church is not only a spiritual space but also an architectural marvel, blending natural elements with human creativity.
Culinary Delights: Finnish Flavors
No trip to Helsinki is complete without indulging in Finnish cuisine. Be sure to taste these local specialties:
- Karjalanpiirakka: These Karelian pasties are a Finnish comfort food, filled with rice porridge or mashed potatoes and topped with egg butter. They're a staple in Finnish homes and a must-try for anyone visiting.
- Salmiakki: Brace yourself for the salty licorice known as salmiakki, a unique Finnish treat. It's an acquired taste but reflects Finland's adventurous culinary side.
- Ruisleipä: Enjoy traditional Finnish rye bread, often served with butter and cheese or used as a base for open-faced sandwiches. It's a testament to the Finnish love for hearty, wholesome food.
- Lohikeitto: Savor a creamy salmon soup, a Finnish classic, often served with rye bread. This dish encapsulates the Finnish connection to the sea and its bounties.
Shopping in Helsinki: Souvenirs and Design
Helsinki is a shopper's paradise, offering a diverse range of shopping experiences. Explore the city's boutiques for Finnish fashion, jewelry, and homeware. Don't forget to pick up some Moomin-themed souvenirs, a beloved Finnish character. The city's shopping scene includes everything from high-end design stores to quirky, local craft shops, providing a rich tapestry of Finnish culture and creativity.
As your time in Helsinki draws to a close, you'll board your cruise ship once again, leaving with lasting memories of this captivating city. The unique combination of natural beauty, modern design, and rich culture makes a Helsinki trip by cruise an unforgettable experience. Whether you're an art enthusiast, a food lover, or a history buff, Helsinki has something to offer every traveler.
The journey back through the Baltic Sea, watching the city fade into the distance, is a moment of reflection. You ponder over the vibrant life of Helsinki, its serene landscapes, and the warm hospitality of its people. This cruise not only gives you a taste of what Helsinki has to offer but also leaves you yearning for more, perhaps another visit to delve deeper into Finland's enchanting capital.
So, set sail for this enchanting Finnish gem and let the adventure begin! Whether it's the first light of dawn over the Baltic or the last glimpse of Helsinki's skyline, each moment is a brushstroke in the canvas of your travel memories.
It is so beautiful over there! Looks like you've had really a good time!
